Sul Ross State Splits Up Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior Joseph Binder and senior Primo Vasquez had three hits each as the Sul Ross State University baseball team (1-2 Lone Star Conference, 1-2) split with St. Mary's (Texas) (2-1 LSC, 2-1), Saturday at Dickson Stadium.  The Lobos lost 14-5 and bounced back to win the nightcap 6-2.  It was the first LSC win for SRSU.

Sul Ross State head coach Caleb Abney
"It's nice to get the first win under our belt. These boys worked their butts off and earned it. But one of the special things about this team is that they are not satisfied. We are all hungry to keep getting better. We are going right back to work and refuse to be content."

Game 1
St. Mary's raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings.  In the third inning, junior Aaron Morales and Binder led off with singles.

Following a fly out that moved Morales to third, junior Chris Ulloa smacked a double to left field.  That scored Morales and moved Binder to third.  Binder would score on a ground out.

In the fourth inning, senior Ricardo Franco led off with a single.  Vasquez crushed the ball over the left field wall to tie the game at 4-4.  The Rattlers would score eight runs over the next two innings to seal the game.

For Sul Ross State, Vasquez had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs while Binder had two hits.  Senior Darren Acosta (0-1) gave up three hits, six runs, walked four and struck out three in 3.1 innings.

Game 2
St. Mary's drew first blood scoring a run in the third inning.  That remained the score until the fifth inning.
In the fifth, an error and two walks loaded the bases with two outs.  Ulloa drilled the ball over the left field fence for a grand slam home run.

Sul Ross State and the Rattlers would each score in the sixth inning.  The Lobos added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Junior Christian Loveless shut down SMU 1-2-3 in the bottom half to close it out.
