Lobos Sees Lady Buffs Move Past

CANYON, Texas – The Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-10 Lone Star Conference, 2-12) lost 78-51 to West Texas A&M (7-4 LSC, 13-5), Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center.

For the first period, Sul Ross State battled tough with West Texas A&M.  Sophomore Melody Martinez hit a jumper in the paint at the 7:12 mark.  That made it 7-4, Lady Buffs.

West Texas A&M pushed the lead to nine, 15-6 with 3:24 to go.  The Lobos then turned on the jets.  Senior Cheyanne Bonilla stole the ball and went the length of the floor for a lay-up.

That ended a 7-0 run by SRSU to cut the gap to two, 15-13 at the 1:53 mark.  The Lady Buffs went back up 19-13 as the period ended.

For the first three minutes of the second period, Sul Ross State played on even terms.  Junior Jema Padilla drove the lane and scored.

That made it 23-19, West Texas A&M at the 7:04 mark.  The Lady Buffs scored 13 straight points to finally take control.

The Lobos continued their solid 3-point defense as the Lady Buffs shot just 27.6%.  This is the third straight game that SRSU has held their opponents to 31.3% or less behind the arc.

For Sul Ross State, Martinez scored 15 points with eight rebounds while Bonilla had nine points, five assists and three steals.

For West Texas A&M, Randi Harding had 16 points.

Sul Ross State is back home, Thursday, Jan. 23, playing Texas A&M International.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
