VOLLEYBALL: Lobos put up a fight in four-set loss to Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. — The Sul Ross State volleyball team put up a fight, but ultimately came up short in a four-set loss to the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Day 2 of the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Challenge at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lobos came out strong in the opening set going on a 7-0 run fueled by two kills from Natalie Hernandez, a kill by Sarah Chavez and two service aces from Eliana Mata.

A kill from Cassandra Espinoza later gave Sul Ross State an eight-point lead.

Sul Ross State was in control the entire set as Espinoza dealt the final kill to put her team ahead 1-0.

There were eight different lead changes in the second set.

Eastern New Mexico went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead early on.

In the middle of the set, the Lobos went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Hernandez tallied another kill while Emily Scott served up an ace during the run.

The Lobos went up by four points after Edie Coleman and Espinoza dealt back-to-back kills.

Eastern New Mexico put together a 5-0 run to flip the score, taking an 18-17 lead.

The score was tied three more times before the Greyhounds pulled away late to tie up the match.

Sul Ross State began the third set with a 7-5 lead.

Eastern New Mexico used a 6-0 run to go ahead, 11-7.

The Greyhounds were up by five points before the Lobos fought back using a 5-0 run to take a 21-19 lead.

Hernandez had two kills during the run while Coleman tallied one kill.

The Lobos were got to within one point from taking the lead in the match, however the Greyhounds closed out the set with a 4-0 run to pull away.

Sul Ross State started the fourth set with a 5-1 lead as Hernandez tallied two kills and Anna Kasper had one kill.

The Lobos maintained the lead early after a service ace from Brylee Sweeten.

After three lead changes, the Greyhounds took control of the set to take the match.

  • The Lobos tallied their highest kill total in a match, coming away with 43.
  • Hernandez had 16 kills, the most tallied by any Lobo in a single game so far this season.
  • Hernandez now leads the team with 44 kills.
  • Espinoza had 10 kills and five digs.
  • Chavez added with eight kills, one service ace, three block assists and five digs.
  • Miranda Acosta tallied 23 digs, four assists and two service aces.
  • Mata had a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs. She also had three service aces.
  • Mata reached the century mark with 100 assists in five matches played.
  • Sweeten finished with 13 digs and two service aces.
  • Tatyana Colon recorded 12 digs and two service aces.
