PORTALES, N.M. — On the final day of the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Challenge, the Sul Ross State Lobos suffered a sweep to the Midwestern State Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lobos held an 8-5 lead in the first set after going on a 3-0 run highlighted by kills from
Cassandra Espinoza and
Edie Coleman.
Midwestern State later used a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead.
The Mustangs surged ahead to a five-point lead.
Sul Ross State battled back with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 17-all. Espinoza had two kills during the run.
Midwestern State answered back with a 6-0 run to pull away and take the set.
Sul Ross State had an early 6-4 lead to start the second set after a kill from
Angelli Sanchez.
The Mustangs used a 5-0 run to pull away and eventually take a 10-point lead to later take a 2-0 lead in the match.
There were eight different lead changes in the final set.
Sul Ross State did not want to go down quietly as it tied up the score at 16-all on a service ace by
Eliana Mata.
Midwestern used a 4-0 run to gain some breathing room, but the Lobos got to within three late in the set after Espinoza and Coleman had a pair of kills.

- Espinoza led the way with 12 kills.
- Natalie Hernandez had 11 kills and five digs.
- Sanchez added with five kills.
- Brylee Sweeten finished with nine digs while Miranda Acosta had eight digs and four assists.
- Mata tallied 30 assists, one service ace, two block assists and four digs.
