The history book continues to be rewritten for the Sul Ross State men's soccer program.
Entering Thursday's match against the University of St. Thomas, the Lobos had never celebrated a victory after a home opener until now.
After notching their first win over a Division II opponent last week, the Lobos extended their winning streak to two games with a 2-0 shutout over the Celts at the Lobo Soccer Field.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a slow start in the first half until
Sean Carlos Rivera gave the Lobos a 1-0 lead when he snuck a ball through the back of the net off an assist by
Diego Hernandez in the 37th minute.
The Lobos had taken eight shots compared to the four taken by the Celts during the first half.
During the 59th minute,
Lewis Coates got a foot on the ball that went off a University of St. Thomas defender to give Sul Ross State an insurance goal that came off an assist by
Carlos Gonzalez.
The University of St. Thomas was given a golden opportunity to erase the shutout with a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but Hamilton Estrada missed wide off the mark.

>> WHAT THE COACH SAID:
"We feel good. It's more history. It belongs to all of them. That's an extremely good opponent for us to beat. We've told them every step along the way — whatever records they beat it belongs to all of them. So, for them to be another piece of history is great. We have a lot of guys that are stepping up. We've got depth everywhere. When you have that it's more of a problem for everybody else, it's a good thing for us. Ben is doing such a great job. He doesn't play like he's a freshman. They run and don't stop running until we tell them to stop. We can't ask for anything more. A clean sheet against a conference champ is not too bad." —
Head coach Bailey Guffin
>> PLAYER INTERVIEWS:
"It was a little bit of a rocky start to say the least, but after that goal we started to calm down. We're playing really well. Most teams don't know what we're about to do to them. Everyone's contributed to the best of their abilities. We're providing results now. It's about time." —
Sean Carlos Rivera
"We obviously need another goal to get that cushion. I saw the defender, took him on, managed to squeeze it in. I'm happy to have scored again for the Lobos. After the loss, I think we all kind of got humbled a little bit and we got our priorities straight, and its shown ever since. It's not always going to be an easy game. So, I'm proud of the boys today." —
Lewis Coates
"This is a great team effort. We all worked for the same thing. We all do the best that we can to win these games. We worked really hard on the defense. It's not just the defense, it's the whole team. When we start pressing and defending it's all together. I'm just confident in myself. I try to do my best. The whole team trusts me, so that's what makes me play really well." —
Benjamin Aviles
>> UP NEXT: The Lobos travel to Alamosa, Colo. for a match against Adams State at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday, Sept. 21.
