BASEBALL: Lobos fall to Concordia in series finale

The Concordia University Tornados pulled off the three-game sweep of the Sul Ross State baseball team with an 18-4 win in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Concordia went ahead 3-0 in the top of the first after tallying four hits. Efren Sanchez Jr. had a two RBI single up the middle to highlight the inning.

The Tornados added a run with an RBI double by Mason DuBois in the top of the third.

Brock Rodgers got the Lobos on the board in the bottom half of the third with an RBI double to left that brought in Christian Garibay.

Concordia scored twice more in the top of the fifth after stringing together three hits to extend its lead to 6-1.

Alvaro Hernandez hit a two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half. Estevan Ortiz later drove in a run with a groundout to short to get his team within two.

Fifteen batters were sent to the plate in the top of the sixth as the Tornados got 10 hits to spark a 10-run inning that included three home runs that helped make the score 16-4.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • Concordia tallied 21 hits while the Lobos had nine.
  • Hernandez went 2 for 3 with a single, home run and two RBI.
  • Hernandez now has four home runs. This was his first home run since March 16 against Hardin-Simmons.
  • Garibay went 2 for 3 with two singles and two stolen bases.
  • Ricardo Franco, Corbin Dube, Primo Vasquez and Christopher Ulloa each went 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Rodgers played in his first game since Feb. 9 against the University of Dallas. He finished 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
>> UP NEXT: The Lobos travel to Brownwood, Texas to take on Howard Payne University for a three-game series beginning with a single game at 2 p.m. CDT on Friday, April 19.
