BASEBALL: Lobos fall in high-scoring doubleheader against UT-Dallas

It was another high-scoring affair at Kokernot Field.

On Friday evening, the Sul Ross State baseball team hosted the University of Texas at Dallas Comets for a twin bill.

The Lobos held a 5-2 lead in Game 1 before surrendering 16 runs in the final two innings to fall 18-6.

Game 2 was similar as the Lobos were up 13-6 before the Comets tacked on seven runs in the sixth to turn the tide to take the contest 21-15.

>> GAME 1:

Sul Ross State scored its first in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Estevan Ortiz that brought in Aaron Morales.

UT-Dallas tied up the game in the third with a leadoff solo home run.

The Comets then took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run in the fourth.

Sul Ross State rallied for four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Ortiz hit a two RBI single while Carsen Thor hit a two-run home run to highlight the inning that gave the Lobos a 5-2 lead.

On five hits, UT-Dallas was able to push across nine runs in the top of the sixth to flip the script by taking an 11-5 lead.

The Lobos pushed across their final two runs in the seventh.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • The Lobos tallied 12 hits.
  • Ortiz finished 2 for 3 with two singles and three RBI.
  • Thor had a home run and a double to 2 for 4 with two RBI.
  • Jared Roiz and Corbin Dube each went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
  • Morales tallied a single and a double to go 2 for 4.
  • Lee Kubosh went 1 for 2 with a single while he also reached base after being hit twice by a pitch.
>> GAME 2:

UT-Dallas shot out of the gate with a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

The Lobos responded with a six-run rally in the bottom of the first to take a 6-4 lead. Christopher Ulloa highlighted the inning with a three-run home run.

Thor, Peytan Kennard and Alvaro Hernandez all had an RBI single during the rally.

On a pair of solo home runs, UT-Dallas tied up the score at six-all in the top of the second.

Sul Ross State answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the second as Ortiz scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Primo Vasquez and Hernandez hit another RBI single to put the Lobos back out in front, 8-6.

Morales gave the Lobos a three-run lead in the third when he hit an RBI single.

Sul Ross State grew its lead to six runs in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three runs. Ulloa plated home Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to right and then Dube hit an RBI double to right.

Morales made the score 12-6 with an RBI single.

The Lobos got another run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle by Vasquez.

UT-Dallas made the game interesting in the top of the sixth by scoring seven runs. Brayshon Savage hit a three-run home run to tie up the score at 13-all.

Sul Ross State took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth when Ulloa scored after a throwing error by the shortstop.

The Comets tied up the score at 14-all in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly.

UT-Dallas pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth to lead 17-14.

Sul Ross State cut the deficit to two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Ortiz scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

  • A total of 45 home runs have been hit at Kokernot Field up to this point.
  • The Lobos had 21 hits compared to the 13 hits by the Comets.
  • Thor went 4 for 6 with four singles and an RBI.
  • Thor has a team-high 33 hits as he rides a four-game hitting streak.
  • Hernandez drove in two runs to go 4 for 6 with four singles.
  • Seven Lobos tallied a multi-hit night.
