BASEBALL: Lobos come up short in Game 3 against Comets, 7-6

After a high-scoring series-opening doubleheader, Game 3 had a different tone.

The Sul Ross State baseball team came up short on Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field by dropping the series finale 7-6 to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a 1-2-3 top of the first for Dawson Beard, the Lobo offense pushed across the first run with an infield RBI single by Primo Vasquez.

The Comets answered back by scoring two runs in the top of the second with an RBI ground out to third and a sacrifice fly to center.

UT-Dallas got another run off a sac fly in the top of the third to make the score 3-1.

On three hits, the Comets were able to rally for two runs in the top of the fourth. UT-Dallas scored on an RBI single to right and a ground out to short.

In the top of the fifth, UT-Dallas rallied for two runs on three hits to lead by six runs.

The Lobos did not back down without a fight.

Aaron Morales hit a one-out double to right center in the bottom of the fifth to ignite a rally. Estevan Ortiz legged out an infield single to short to put runners at the corners.

Carsen Thor then delivered an RBI single to right and then Peyten Kennard followed things up with an RBI double to right to cut the deficit to four runs.

Vasquez helped push across the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right to put the Lobos behind by three.

Jared Roiz and Alvaro Hernandez hit back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-6.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • The Lobos managed to out-hit the Comets, 13-12.
  • Vasquez finished 3 for 3 with three singles, a walk and two RBI.
  • Vasquez raised his average to .325 as he ranks second on the team with 18 RBI.
  • Thor went 2 for 5 with two singles and an RBI.
  • Thor finished the series going 8 for 15 with four RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games.
  • Ortiz had two singles to go 2 for 5, extending his hit streak to nine games.
  • Kennard went 2 for 4 with a single, double, a walk and an RBI.
  • Roiz, Ricardo Franco and Hernandez all went 1 for 4 with a single.
  • The Lobo bullpen did not allow a single run in four innings of relief. Relievers Austin Vara, Corbin Dube and Christian Loveless combined to allow just two hits while striking out two batters.
>> UP NEXT: The Lobos travel to Clarksville, Ark. to take on the University of the Ozarks for a three-game series beginning Thursday, March 28 with a doubleheader. First pitch is at 4 p.m. CST.
