BASEBALL: Lobos and Yellow Jackets combine for 10 home runs in twin bill

It was an explosive twin bill Friday afternoon at Kokernot Field as the Sul Ross State baseball team and the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets combined for 10 home runs.

The Lobos dropped Game 1 by a close score of 10-9 while they fell in the nightcap by a score of 15-4.

>> GAME 1:

LeTourneau took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a pair of home runs.

The Yellow Jackets then pushed across six runs on six hits in the third. Ben Jones and Blake Vice each hit a pair of two-run home runs to make the score 8-0.

Sul Ross State answered back in the bottom half of the third with two RBI singles by Estevan Ortiz and Primo Vasquez.

Using a big six-run fourth, the Lobos tied up the game at eight-all.

After a leadoff double by Lee Kubosh, Jared Roiz doubled down the right field line to bring in Kubosh.

Alvaro Hernandez then drove in Roiz with a single through the right side while Aaron Morales hit a clutch RBI triple to left center.

Ortiz tallied an RBI single to cut the deficit to two.

Peyten Kennard later delivered a two RBI double to tie up the score.

With one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth, LeTourneau was able to take a 10-8 lead when Dane Jones hit a two-run home run.

Carsen Thor led off the bottom half of the sixth with a solo home run to trail by one.

The Lobos left a runner stranded in the bottom of the seventh as Roiz hit a leadoff single.

  • The Lobos out-hit LeTourneau, 16-13.
  • Thor went 4 for 4 with two singles, a double, home run and an RBI.
  • Vasquez finished 3 for 3 with three singles and an RBI.
  • Roiz had two singles and a double to go 3 for 4 with an RBI.
  • Ortiz finished 2 for 5 with two singles and two RBI.
>> GAME 2:

The Yellow Jackets struck first in the top of the third, taking a 2-0 lead.

On six hits, LeTourneau was able to push across seven runs in the top of the fifth, increasing its lead to 9-0.

Sul Ross State erased the shutout in the bottom of the fifth when Ortiz drove in Kubosh on a single to left.

LeTourneau went on to score six runs over the next three innings.

The Lobos pushed across one run in the bottom of the seventh when Ortiz brought in Christian Garibay on a fielder's choice.

Sul Ross State scored its final two runs of the game when Thor belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.
