BASEBALL: Lee Kubosh homers twice, Lobos fall to Tigers, 16-6, in series finale

MARSHALL, Texas — The Sul Ross State baseball team suffered a 16-6 loss to the fifth-ranked East Texas Baptist University Tigers in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Ballpark at Woods Field.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

All five of the Lobos' hits went for extra bases.

Peyten Kennard hit an RBI double in the first inning that drove in Estevan Ortiz.

The Tigers tied up the game in the bottom half of the first when they got a run across the plate on an error by the shortstop.

ETBU took a 3-1 lead in the second on three hits which included an RBI single and an RBI double.

Adding to the lead, the Tigers scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to extend their lead to 4-1.

Lee Kubosh led off the fifth with a solo home run to cut the deficit to four runs.

As the Tigers added a run in the bottom half of the fifth, the Lobos rallied back in the sixth when Ortiz scored on a fielder's choice and Kubosh belted a two-run home run.

Christian Garibay got Sul Ross State behind by one run in the seventh when he hit a one-out solo home run.

ETBU then answered back by scoring nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh to end the game early.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • Kubosh finished 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBI.
  • Kubosh becomes the first Lobo to hit two home runs in a game since April 22.
  • Jared Roiz went 1 for 3 after hitting a double in the fifth.
  • Garibay went 1 for 3 with a home run and an RBI.
  • Kennard finished 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Ortiz reached base three times on three walks as he scored two runs.
  • Starting pitcher Gage Cobb struck out six batters in four innings of work.
  • Cobb remains the team leader in strikeouts with 21.
