As temperatures plummeted to the mid-30s Saturday night, the Sul Ross State softball team took to the diamond for the home opener against the Austin College Kangaroos.
The Lobos trailed 6-2 before surmounting a comeback to win, 9-7, at the Lobo Softball Field in Game 1.
A doubleheader was initially scheduled, but the second game was canceled due to the cold conditions.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Austin College struck early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first on two hits.
The Kangaroos made the score 3-0 in the second after an RBI single.
Sul Ross State erased the shutout in the bottom of the second when two runs scored after an error by the right fielder.
Austin College rallied for three runs on two hits in the top of the third to lead 6-2.
Adriana Hernandez ignited the Lobo offense in the bottom half of the third when she crushed a solo home run to center to cut the deficit in half.
Elizabeth Clemente later hit a pinch-hit two RBI double to left to put the Lobos behind by one run.
Lily Wiser gave the Lobos a 7-6 lead in the fourth when she belted a two-run home run to left center after
Toni Mishnick drew a one-out walk.
Samantha Chavez drove in the final two runs in the bottom of the fifth when she hit a two RBI single through the left side.

- Chavez went 2 for 4 with two singles and two RBI.
- Wiser finished 1 for 4 with two RBI and a home run.
- Hernandez also finished 1 for 4.
- Madison Hodges went 1 for 2 with a double and two walks.
- Ciera Avila tallied two walks and a single to go 1 for 2.
- Kyndell Garcia hit a single to go 1 for 3 with a run scored.
- Jaelyn Zuniga notched her first win in the circle after going five innings allowing three hits with one strikeout.
