SOFTBALL: Lobos take down Austin College 11-3 in Game 2

It was a solid offensive production by the Sul Ross State softball team.

On Sunday morning, the Lobos made quick work of the Austin College Kangaroos with an 11-3 win in six innings at the Lobo Softball Field.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Austin College got on the board in the top of the first when a run scored on a fielder's choice to short.

The Lobos erupted for six runs on five hits in the bottom half of the first.

Sul Ross State tied up the game during a first and third situation where Lily Wiser had a delayed steal to bait a throwdown which allowed Samantha Chavez to swipe home.

Wiser later scored after an error by the shortstop.

Ciera Avila added to the inning by hitting an RBI double to left center. Kyndell Garcia followed up with an RBI single to right.

A similar situation happened again with runners at the corners when Alisandria Garcia stole second and Kyndell Garcia was able to steal home.

The Lobos got one final run after an error by the pitcher to make the score 6-1.

Jaelyn Zuniga helped increase the lead to six when she hit an RBI single to left during the bottom of the second.

Austin College cut the deficit to four on an RBI double and a throwing error in the top of the third.

Sul Ross State rallied for four runs in the sixth to end the game early on the run rule.

Chavez scored on an error by the second baseman while Zuniga drove in Toni Mishnick with a sacrifice fly to center during the rally.

Elizabeth Clemente then delivered a two RBI pinch-hit single to right center to end the game.

>> WHAT THE COACH SAID:

"I'm really excited. The kids have been working hard. We kind of took a lump over there in San Antonio. For us to come out and play like we did was really good. It comes down to confidence. We're a pretty young team, so I think they're gaining confidence with every game, every inning that we play." — Head coach Troy Canaba on getting the sweep of Austin College

"Yesterday (Saturday), at the beginning, we were trying to be heroes, swinging at first pitches. They became really disciplined last night and today. They adjusted at the plate. Hitting is contagious. We just need someone to light us a fire. Our offense is really good and I think our defense is pretty good. If we can just stay with that we'll be OK." — Head coach Troy Canaba on his team's offensive and defensive production

>> WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:

"I think this was very much needed. Throughout the whole week we focused on the little things and I think we came out here and produced very well. We kept the energy high. It was a well-rounded game. We all went up there with a purpose. We're all determined to do a job. My mindset was it starts with me. If I can find a way on then I can keep it going and the energy will find itself." — Samantha Chavez

"We still have a little to work on with offense and defense, but we're improving and that's all we need to do. The freshmen come in clutch. It's all the work that we put in. Coach Canaba makes sure we're ready. He trusts us and knows we can handle the pressure." — Lily Wiser

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos host Schreiner University for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. CST on Saturday, Feb. 24.
