It was the final contest of the 2023-2024 season for the Sul Ross State men's basketball program at the Pete P. Gallego Center as a member of NCAA Division III.
The end result wasn't what the Lobos had hoped for as they fell 74-65 to the East Texas Baptist Tigers in front of a crowd of 235 fans.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Five seniors started the game for the Lobos as
Jordan Rhyne won the opening tip.
Larry Morrison then laid down a dunk to tie up the score at two-all.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead before
Bryson Laird nailed a three-pointer to put Sul Ross State back out in front, 6-4.
East Texas Baptist separated itself by going on a 10-0 run that began with two straight 3-pointers.
The Lobos cut the deficit down to six after two free throws from
Tyler Jackson.
East Texas Baptist made eight 3-pointers in the first half which allowed it to take a 19-point lead at the 3:14 mark.
Myles Amason stepped up and knocked down a three to close out a 5-0 run that put the Lobos behind by 13 at the half.
The Lobos started off on a 4-0 run in the second half as Jackson made two free throws and
Zyrin Brantley had a jumper in the paint.
Sul Ross State kept chipping away as it ended up trailing by five at the 13:15 mark after Morrison hit a shot in the paint.
The Lobos went on a 5-0 run where
Gabe Sanchez got a three-point play after being fouled on a made layup.
Jackson also put down a dunk during the run that put the Lobos behind by two with 10:18 on the clock.
East Texas Baptist responded by going on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 10.
The Lobos answered with an 8-0 run of their own to trail by two with 3:06 to go.
Cailean Ables highlighted the run by scoring six points.
Putting together a 6-0 run, the Tigers went up by eight before Sanchez hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five with 1:08 to go.
East Texas Baptist made four free throws down the stretch to pull away with the win.
