BROWNWOOD, Texas — It was the final game of the 2023-2024 season Saturday afternoon.

The Sul Ross State men's basketball team suffered an 87-85 loss to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The score was tied six times during the first half.

Sul Ross State went on a 4-0 run to tie up the score at 10-all before Howard Payne came back to take a three-point lead.

Hayden Peterson later knocked down a three to tie up the game at 15-all.

Howard Payne went up by two and then Myles Amason made a layup to deadlock the score at 17-all with 11:35 on the clock.

Right after the Yellow Jackets went ahead by two, Deveraux Minix hit a three-pointer to give the Lobos a 20-19 lead.

Howard Payne answered back with a three of its own to lead by two at the 10:43 mark.

As the lead changed back and forth, the Lobos gained some separation by going on a 9-0 run to lead by four.

Cailean Ables hit a three-pointer while Amason scored four points on a pair of layups.

Howard Payne then went on a 6-0 run to lead by two at the 5:12 mark.

With 46 seconds to go in the half, Omar Ibarra scored with a layup to put the Lobos ahead by two before the Yellow Jackets made a free throw with 33 seconds to go to trail by one at the break.

The Lobos went on a solid run during the second half, putting together 10 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead with 15:12 on the clock.

Peterson started the run with a three-pointer while Tyler Jackson scored five points which included a dunk.

Sul Ross State led by as much as 11 at the 11:24 mark after Gabe Sanchez was fouled on a made layup.

Howard Payne went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to four.

The Yellow Jackets knocked down a pair of three-pointers to help chisel the lead down to one point with 7:16 to go.

Sul Ross State then used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to nine. Minix landed a three during the run.

Answering back with an 6-0 run, the Yellow Jackets got to within three points with 2:36 left in the contest.

With 1:18 to go, Howard Payne tied up the score at 83-all.

Jackson gave the Lobos a two-point lead on a made layup with 46 seconds to go.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the game on a 4-0 run to secure the win.

• Jackson finished with a season-high 32 points along with three steals and four rebounds. Jackson shot 12 for 14 from the free throw line and 10 for 15 from the field.
• Peterson added with nine points and six assists.
• Ables also had nine points to go with three rebounds and two assists.
• Manny Flores tallied eight rebounds, six points, three steals and two assists.
• Sanchez had nine points.
• Minix and Amason each recorded six points. Amason grabbed five rebounds while Minix had three assists.
• The Lobos shot 19 for 23 from the free throw line while making eight 3-pointers. Peterson knocked down three 3-pointers.
• Sul Ross State grabbed 35 rebounds and 11 steals.
