MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos fall to MSU Denver in Game 2 of Far West Texas Showdown

On Day 1 of the Far West Texas Showdown, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team suffered an 89-61 loss to the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners during the home opener on Saturday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Ethan Yancy got the Lobos their first bucket with a layup that came off a steal by Louie Yebra.

Cam Clardy followed up with a jumper in the paint that ended up becoming a three-point play after a foul was called.

MSU Denver then got a free throw from Brayden Carter to get on the board.

Clay Baldwin knocked down a three-pointer to extend Sul Ross State's lead to seven with 15:43 in the first half.

The Lobos went on a 6-0 run that had four points scored by Yancy as well as a layup by Baldwin to make the score 14-6 with 12:40 on the clock.

MSU Denver scored four unanswered points and then Caden Holmes hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three.

A pair of made free throws and a three from Caleb McGill gave the Roadrunners an 18-16 lead.

The score was tied twice until Sufyan Elkannan hit a three to give MSU Denver the lead back with 8:22 remaining.

Sul Ross State fought back to tie the game at 25-all after Clardy made a jumper in the paint and Yancy scored three points.

MSU Denver answered back with a pair of three-pointers to lead by four.

The Roadrunners closed out the half on a 7-0 run, taking a nine-point lead in the locker room.

MSU Denver went on to outscore the Lobos, 47-28, in the second half.

  • Yancy led the Lobos with 16 points, three steals and four rebounds.
  • Clardy and Baldwin each scored 15 points. Clardy grabbed five rebounds.
  • Myles Amason had eight points, two blocks and two rebounds.
  • Bryce Harris led the way with seven boards.
  • The Lobos were out-rebounded, 42-27.
  • Sul Ross State shot 12 for 18 from the free throw line.
  • The Lobos had three 3-pointers. Baldwin knocked down two shots from beyond the arc.
