MARSHALL, Texas — Hoping to extend the winning streak, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team began 2024 with a long road trip to East Texas Baptist University.
The Lobos held a six-point lead in the second half, unfortunately they couldn't stay on top as the Tigers came away with the 50-46 victory Thursday night at Ornelas Gymnasium.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a quick 2-2 tie in the first half, the Lobos went on an 8-2 run to lead by as much as six with 14:52 on the clock.
Omar Ibarra had a steal and four points during the run while
Tyler Jackson landed a layup to make the score 10-4.
The Tigers cut it down to four, but Sul Ross State went back up by six on a jumper by
Manny Flores that came off a defensive rebound by
Deveraux Minix.
ETBU made two 3-pointers to trail by one with 8:31 left on the clock.
Gabe Sanchez drained a three-pointer to put the Lobos ahead by four before the Tigers put together a 5-0 run to lead, 20-19, with 5:37 to go.
Jackson scored three points to put Sul Ross State up by two after he made a free throw and slammed down a dunk.
Closing out on a 6-0 run, the Tigers entered the locker room at halftime with a 26-22 lead.
ETBU led by nine early in the second half.
Sul Ross State cut the deficit down to three using a 6-0 run highlighted by four points from
Cailean Ables and a layup by Jackson.
The Lobos kept up the momentum by stringing together an 11-0 run that began with a dunk from
Bryce Harris.
Harris scored five points during the run which helped Sul Ross State go up by six with 10:22 on the clock.
On two quick layups, the Tigers were behind by two until Jackson scored with a layup to put the Lobo lead back to four at the 7:48 mark.
The lead changed twice in the final six and a half minutes.
Sul Ross State held a two-point lead at the 5:56 mark, but the Tigers used a 4-0 run to take a two-point lead.
Ables tied up the game at 45-all with 2:48 left to go.
ETBU closed out the contest on a 5-1 run to sneak away with the win.

- Jackson led the way with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Jackson is ninth in the conference in rebounding with 81 boards.
- Ables added with 10 points and three assists.
- Sanchez had seven points and four rebounds. Sanchez ranks second in the American Southwest Conference with 36 made three-pointers.
- Harris finished with five points, six rebounds and one block.
- Ibarra tallied four points, one steal and two assists.
- Manny Flores and Myles Amason each grabbed five rebounds. Amason also had two blocks to give him 14 this season, which ranks seventh in the ASC.
- Hayden Peterson tallied two steals as he is seventh in the ASC in steals (21).
- The Lobos shot 5 for 12 from the free throw line and 20 for 46 from the field.
- Sul Ross State had 34 rebounds, four blocks, six steals and seven assists.
