MEN'S BASKETBALL: Sul Ross State falls to conference-leading Hardin-Simmons

The Sul Ross State men's basketball team was trying to get revenge by knocking off the conference-leading Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys on Thursday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

In front of a large crowd of 259 fans, the Lobos fell to the Cowboys, 68-55.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lobos trailed 4-0 at the start of the first half before Tyler Jackson got them on the board with a layup.

Jackson later got Sul Ross State to within two after he made another layup.

Myles Amason then made one of two free throws to put the Lobos behind by one.

Hardin-Simmons used an 8-0 run to increase its lead to nine at the 12:35 mark before Gabe Sanchez ended the run with a three-pointer.

The Cowboys led by as much as 13 with 10:15 on the clock.

Behind a 9-0 run, Sul Ross State cut the deficit all the way down to four points. Cailean Ables started the rally with a three-pointer as he went on to score five points during the run.

Sul Ross State managed to get to within three after Jackson made a layup with 4:24 to go in the opening half.

Hardin-Simmons used a pair of three-pointers to eventually up its lead to 10 at the 2:05 mark.

The Lobos used a 4-0 run to trail by six before the Cowboys made a layup to take an eight-point lead at the break.

Amason put together a 4-0 run as he got the Lobos behind by six after they trailed by 10 early in the second half.

Hardin-Simmons then surged ahead to lead by as much as 19 with 3:37 to go.

Using a 9-0 run, the Lobos cut the deficit to 10 but time wasn't on their side, unfortunately.

  • Jackson led the Lobos with 21 points and nine rebounds.
  • Sanchez added with 12 points.
  • Amason chipped in with nine points, two blocks and three assists.
  • Ables scored six points while grabbing five rebounds.
  • The Lobos shot 13 for 18 from the free throw line.
  • Hardin-Simmons narrowly grabbed more rebounds than the Lobos, 36-35.
  • The Lobos had 26 points in the paint and 28 points from the bench.
  • The attendance of 259 fans is the largest crowd of the season, surpassing the previous high of 175 recorded on Nov. 30 against the University of the Ozarks.
