MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos complete series sweep of Eagles with 62-59 win

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — For the first time in five years, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team was able to notch a win on the road over the University of the Ozarks Eagles.

On Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Gymnasium, the Lobos held on for a 62-59 victory to extend their win streak to two games.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Behind a jumper in the paint by Cailean Ables and two free throws from Tyler Jackson, the Lobos held a three-point lead in the first half.

Using a 7-0 run, the Eagles jumped out ahead to a four-point lead with 12:08 on the clock.

At one point, the Ozarks held a six-point lead before the Lobos got to within one after going on a 5-0 run at the 6:36 mark. Zyrin Brantley scored three points while Myles Amason added to the run with a dunk.

After Ables grabbed a steal, Manny Flores knocked down a three-pointer to fuel another 5-0 run that put Sul Ross State up three.

The Eagles answered back with a three-pointer of their own to tie the game at 21-all with 5:14 to go.

Bryce Harris put the Lobos back out in front with a layup.

With two made free throws, the Ozarks tied up the score at 23-all.

Gabe Sanchez and Jackson both capitalized on shots in the paint to muster up a 4-0 run that gave the Lobos a 27-23 lead at the 1:58 mark.

The Eagles closed out the first half with a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead into the locker room at the break.

During the second half, the Lobos trailed by six before surmounting a 7-0 run. Flores tallied five points which included another three-pointer.

The Ozarks tied up the game at 36-all after going one for two at the free throw line.

Amason scored on a layup to help start another 7-0 run that was also highlighted by a three from Hayden Peterson.

Sul Ross State's lead grew to nine at the 8:27 mark after Sanchez nailed a three-pointer.

The Eagles began to chip away as they went on a 4-0 run to trail by one with two and a half minutes to go in the game.

Trey Nelson made a jumper to put the Lobos ahead by three before the Ozarks cut the deficit to one with 14 seconds on the clock.

Nelson made two free throws in the final 10 seconds to help the Lobos escape with the win.

  • Amason led the way with 11 points, six blocks, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
  • Amason has 13 blocks in his last three games while he's averaged 11.3 points during the span.
  • Flores added with 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Sanchez and Brantley each had seven points. Brantley also had three assists and three rebounds.
  • Jackson and Ables both scored six points apiece. The duo also grabbed a combined eight rebounds.
  • The Lobos shot 13 for 15 from the free throw line. Nelson, Flores and Jackson went a combined 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.
  • Sul Ross State won the battle on the boards by grabbing 45 rebounds compared to the 39 reeled in by the Eagles.
  • The Lobos had 32 points in the paint while the bench contributed with 33 points.
  • The last time the Lobos won in Clarksville, Ark. was back on Jan. 5, 2019.
