MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos triumph over Comets, 66-65

Gabe Sanchez hit the game-winning floater with 0.8 seconds to go

RICHARDSON, Texas — Trailing by one point late in the contest, Trey Nelson dished out to Gabe Sanchez who landed what ended up being the game-winning floater to help lift the Sul Ross State men's basketball team over the University of Texas at Dallas Comets, 66-65, on Thursday night at the UTD Activity Center.

The Lobos snapped a three-game losing streak while also notching their first win over the Comets since Jan. 30, 2021.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

It was an exhilarating game from start to finish as there were 11 lead changes while the score was tied 12 times.

The score was tied three times early in the first half before the Lobos went on a 5-0 run to take a five-point lead.

Deveraux Minix highlighted the run with a three-pointer at the 13:46 mark.

UT-Dallas then went off on an 18-0 run to flip the script and make the score 24-11 with 6:26 on the clock. The Comets made four 3-pointers during the big run.

The Lobos erased the double-digit deficit by firing off a 9-0 run to trail by five with 3:16 left in the opening half.

Manny Flores landed a three-pointer while Myles Amason scored four points during the rally.

Cailean Ables made a layup at the 2:52 mark to put the Lobos behind by four at halftime.

UT-Dallas led by as much as eight with 14:03 in the second half.

Behind a 10-0 run, the Lobos took a two-point lead. Nelson and Omar Ibarra each hit a pair of clutch three-pointers.

The Comets tied up the game at 39-all until Amason slammed down a dunk to swing the momentum back to Sul Ross State.

As the pendulum began to swing back and forth, the lead changed nine times until the Lobos broke a 54-54 tie on a layup by Nelson at the 4:29 mark.

Zyrin Brantley later landed a layup to put Sul Ross State up by four.

UT-Dallas used a 4-0 run to tie up the score at 61-all with 1:29 left in the contest.

Sanchez then stepped up and hit a three to give the Lobos the lead back.

Using another 4-0 run, the Comets were able to take a 65-64 lead with 26 seconds on the clock.

After a timeout by the Lobos, Nelson drove through the paint before spinning and dishing a pass off Sanchez, who then put up the floater with 0.8 seconds to go.

UT-Dallas threw up a shot in desperation, but it was off the backboard.

  • UT-Dallas had won the last five meetings against Sul Ross State. The Lobos last defeated the Comets on Jan. 30, 2021 by a score of 85-77 in Richardson, Texas.
  • Amason led the Lobos with 12 points and a season-high six blocks.
  • Tyler Jackson added with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Nelson tallied 10 points and six assists.
  • Sanchez added with eight points, one assist and two rebounds.
  • Ibarra and Ables each had seven points. Ables grabbed seven rebounds while Ibarra tallied four assists and four rebounds.
  • The Lobos shot 12 of 16 from the free throw line. Nelson went 5 for 5 from the charity stripe.
  • Sul Ross State grabbed 34 rebounds, 29 came on the defensive end.
  • The Lobos shot 62.5% from the field in the second half (15 for 24).
  • Sul Ross State crushed it in the paint making 34 points while it also had 37 points from the bench.
