BASEBALL: Lobos win Game 2, 16-4, to win the series during slugfest doubleheader

Aaron Morales drives in six runs during doubleheader

It was a slugfest during the series finale between the Sul Ross State baseball team and the McMurry War Hawks during a chilly Friday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

Ultimately, the Lobos took the series two games to three.

Sul Ross won Game 2 by a dominating score of 16-4.

The tables were turned in Game 3 as this time the McMurry offense came alive to win, 18-6, in eight innings.

>> GAME 2:

Starting pitcher Gage Cobb improved to 2-1 after he tossed a four-hitter allowing three earned runs while he struck out three batters.

Christian Loveless shut the McMurry offense down in the final two innings as he did not allow a single hit or run.

The Lobos had three-straight singles by Primo Vasquez, Aaron Morales and Lee Kubosh to begin the bottom of the first.

Tye Lindsey then came through with an RBI single through the left side. A run later scored on an error by the second baseman.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the third for Sul Ross.

Carsen Thor started the fireworks with a lead off solo home run to left. Lindsey later tripled to left center to set up an RBI single to center by Mateo Saenz.

Estevan Ortiz delivered a clutch two RBI double to left center to make the score 6-0.

Vasquez followed up with a two-run home run to left center.

Lindsey came up once again and delivered a two RBI single to left to increase the Lobo lead to 10-0.

McMurry erased the shutout in the top of the fourth by pushing across three runs.

The Lobos answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Morales drove in Alvaro Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to center.

Kubosh then hit an RBI single while Thor drove in Kubosh with a single through the left side to make the score 13-3.

Sul Ross added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Saenz scored on a balk while Morales hit a two RBI single to center.

The Lobos scattered 19 hits while six hitters had a multi-hit outing.

Morales went 3 for 4 with three singles and three RBI while Kubosh finished 3 for 5 with three singles and an RBI.

Lindsey drove in three runs to go 3 for 5 with two singles and a triple.

Ortiz had two singles, a double and two RBI to finish 3 for 3 with two runs scored and a walk.

Vasquez went 2 for 4 with a single, home run and two RBI.

Hernandez added to the offense by going 1 for 2 with a single and a walk. Matthew Wheeler also had a single and a walk to go 1 for 3.

Saenz ended up going 1 for 4 with a single and an RBI.

>> GAME 3:

McMurry started off the finale by taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom half of the first, Jared Roiz hit a lead off double down the right field line. Vasquez then hit a single to put runners at first and third.

Morales drove in a run with a ground out to second. Lindsey later delivered an RBI single to left.

With the Lobos holding on to a 2-1 lead, the War Hawks rallied for five runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.

After being held scoreless for four-straight innings, Sul Ross scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth with three-straight RBI singles from Vasquez, Morales and Tristan Karels.

The War Hawks scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to run away with the game.

Vasquez finished 3 for 5 with two singles, a triple and an RBI while Morales went 2 for 5 with two singles and three RBI.

Roiz and Karels both ended up going 1 for 5. Lindsey finished 1 for 3 with the RBI single, two stolen bases and a walk.

Orlando Moreno hit a double in the fourth to go 1 for 4.

Dawson Beard started on the mound going 4.1 innings allowing five hits and three earned runs. Derek Rojo faced seven batters in 2/3 of an inning.

Aiden Becker, Aidan Mow, Jacob Salinas and Dean Foley all had relief appearances. Foley struck out two batters and allowed one hit in 2/3 of an inning.
