Jared Roiz homers twice, tallies seven RBI

There was no shortage of offense, excitement or drama during the series finale between the Sul Ross State baseball team and Howard Payne University.

Both teams combined for 53 hits, 49 runs and 10 home runs.

When it was all said and done, the Yellow Jackets overcame a 12-run deficit by rallying for 14 runs in the sixth to win a slugfest by a score of 26-23 on Saturday evening at Kokernot Field.

Sul Ross now finds itself tied for sixth-place in the latest American Southwest Conference standings.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Howard Payne held a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Lobos took the lead in the bottom half of the first by rallying for four runs.

Tristan Karels hit a two-run home run to get things going. Carsen Thor then drove in a run with a double to left center.

Matthew Wheeler followed up with an RBI single.

The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit in half by scoring a run in the top of the second.

Sul Ross put up a five spot in the bottom of the second. Jared Roiz hit a two-run home run and then Tye Lindsey drove in Aaron Morales with a single.

Wheeler made the score 9-2 in favor of the Lobos by hitting a two-RBI single.

Sul Ross extended its lead to eight runs when Lindsey drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.

With their foot on the accelerator, the Lobos rallied for four runs in the fourth.

Roiz blasted a grand slam to make the score 14-2.

After being held scoreless for two-straight innings, Howard Payne scored one run in the top of the fifth.

The Lobos went up by 12 runs in the bottom half of the fifth after Roiz drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Trailing 15-3, Howard Payne used 10 hits, five of which were home runs, to rally for 14 runs to take a 17-15 lead in the top of the sixth.

Nineteen batters came up to the plate during the big rally for the Yellow Jackets.

Sul Ross came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Morales hit a leadoff triple and then Karels hit an RBI single. Thor later delivered the game-tying RBI single.

Howard Payne scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 19-17 lead.

The Lobos cut the deficit to one run in the bottom half of the seventh when Morales hit a two-out RBI single.
