CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — Behind 11 hits and a big five-run fourth, the Sul Ross State softball defeated the University of the Ozarks, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Hurie Field.
The Lobos won the series two games to three.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lobos scored three runs in the top of the first.
Samantha Chavez hit a leadoff single to left and then stole second.
Nadia Valverde drew a walk and Chavez advanced to third on a wild pitch.
With runners at first and third, the Lobos executed the double steal as Chavez stole home for the first run.
Down two outs, Sul Ross pushed across two runs after an error by the shortstop.
The Eagles cut the deficit to one run by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first.
Sul Ross rallied for five runs in the top of the fourth as two runs scored on an error by the left fielder to make the score 5-2.
Valverde then delivered an RBI double to left center to bring in
Annika Canaba.
On a bunt single by
Camryn Hardin, Valverde was able to score to increase the lead to five runs.
Adriana Hernandez pushed across the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Eagles committed five errors, including two in the sixth which allowed Sul Ross to push across another run.
Four Lobos had a multi-hit afternoon.
Chavez went 2 for 4 with two singles, a walk and two runs scored while Hardin also finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Jaelyn Zuniga tallied two singles to go 2 for 3.
Jenna Spencer singled in the fourth and fifth to finish 2 for 3 with a walk.
Valverde went 1 for 3 with the RBI double. Hernandez also went 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI.
Claire Decker hit a single to go 1 for 4.
Leanza Chambers improved to 4-2 after throwing a complete-game with three strikeouts.
