ABILENE — Despite having more hits than Hardin-Simmons, the Sul Ross State baseball team came up short by dropping an 11-8 decision Friday night at Hunter Field.
The Lobos scored first on an RBI single by
Carsen Thor in the top of the first.
Hardin-Simmons tied up the game in the bottom half of the first with an RBI double.
After a leadoff double by
Tristan Karels to start the top of the third,
Tye Lindsey hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in a run to put Sul Ross ahead 2-1.
The Cowboys rallied for three runs in the third and five runs in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.
Lindsey delivered an RBI double in the fifth to make the score 9-3.
Sul Ross kept battling and chipping away as it scored four runs in the top of the eighth. Karels came in the clutch by hitting a two RBI single.
Thor then drove in Karels and
Orlando Moreno with a single to right to cut the deficit to two runs.
Hardin-Simmons scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth.
Christopher Ulloa managed to score after a throwing error by the second baseman in the top of the ninth.
The Lobos had 13 hits while Hardin-Simmons tallied 10.
Karels had a quality day at the plate going 4 for 5 with three singles, a double and two RBI. Thor finished 2 for 5 with two singles and three RBI.
Peyten Kennard tallied two singles to go 2 for 3. Lindsey drove in two runs to go 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Aaron Morales went 1 for 5 with a single while
Estevan Ortiz hit a single to go 1 for 4.
Jared Roiz also finished 1 for 5 with a single.
Chris Ibanez started on the mound as he tossed 2.1 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Cade Watson struck out six batters in 5.2 innings of relief while he allowed six hits.
