BASEBALL: Sul Ross splits twin bill with Hardin-Simmons to close out series

Lobos win Game 2 by a score of 2-1

ABILENE — During the series finale Saturday afternoon, the Sul Ross State baseball team split a doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons at Hunter Field.

The Lobos won Game 2, 2-1, in eight innings while the Cowboys took Game 3, 5-3, in seven innings.

>> GAME 2:

In the top of the first, Primo Vasquez had a leadoff single while Carsen Thor drew a two-out walk. Tye Lindsey then delivered an RBI single to center.

Hardin-Simmons was held scoreless for six straight innings until it tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Sterling Inman scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth which proved to be the deciding factor for Sul Ross.

The Lobos matched Hardin-Simmons on offense with six hits.

Lindsey finished 2 for 4 with two singles, an RBI and a stolen base. Lee Kubosh and Estevan Ortiz each went 1 for 3 with a single.

Vasquez ended up going 1 for 4 with the single and a run scored. Matthew Wheeler tallied a single and a walk to go 1 for 2.

Gage Cobb threw a four-hitter in six innings pitched while he struck out four batters. Connor Archer allowed two hits in two innings of relief.

>> GAME 3:

To start the series finale, the Lobos trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second.

Sul Ross tied up the game on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Morales that brought in Lindsey during the top of the fourth.

The Cowboys tied up the game in the bottom half of the fourth and then they scored three runs in the fifth to make the score 5-1.

Sul Ross attempted to rally in the top of the sixth by scoring two runs. Kevin Potts hit a one-out single while Peyten Kennard drew a walk.

Morales delivered an RBI double down the right field line. Kennard later scored on a throwing error by the right fielder.

Similar to Game 2, Sul Ross tallied six hits.

Wheeler finished 2 for 3 with two singles and a walk while Morales went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI.

Lindsey tallied a single to go 1 for 3 while Vasquez finished 1 for 4 with a single. Potts ended up going 1 for 2 with the single.

Dawson Beard pitched 3.2 innings of three-hit ball while he allowed three earned runs. Derek Rojo faced four batters in a 1/3 of an inning.

Aidan Mow relieved the final three innings allowing three hits.

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos travel to the University of Texas at Dallas for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 24 at 12 p.m.
