TUCSON, Ariz. — Behind some solid pitching and timely hitting, the Sul Ross State baseball team swept Hamline University by the scores of 4-3 and 3-1 on Day 2 of the Tucson Invitational at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Lobos have now won six games in a row.
"The pitching staff kept us in this ballgame. Offensively, we started off slow. We never had the big inning and the big hits that we needed, but the pitching staff did their job today," Sul Ross head coach
Ely Gallego.
>> GAME 1:
It was a classic pitchers duel between Sul Ross State's
Gage Cobb and Hamline's Zach Branson.
The game was scoreless through three until Hamline took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the Lobos answered back with an RBI double to left by
Tristan Karels that drove in
Lee Kubosh.
Mateo Saenz then tied up the game with an RBI single to right center.
Hamline took a one-run lead in the sixth.
The Lobos did not back down in the bottom half of the sixth.
Peyten Kennard drove in Kubosh on a groundout to second to tie the game.
Saenz later put Sul Ross ahead 4-3 with a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Karels.
Sul Ross tallied eight hits.
Saenz finished 2 for 2 with two singles and two RBI while
Kevin Potts also went 2 for 2 with two singles and a walk.
Karels had a single, a double and an RBI to go 2 for 3. Kubosh scored two runs to finish 1 for 2 with a single and a walk.
Primo Vasquez tallied a single to go 1 for 4.
Cobb tossed six innings allowing six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
Aiden Becker came in to notch his first save of the season after he allowed one hit in one scoreless inning of work.

Sul Ross took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second to start the second game.
Carsen Thor drilled a leadoff solo home run down the left field line.
Matthew Wheeler then drove in
Tye Lindsey on an RBI single to right.
The Lobos got one more run in the top of the sixth which came on an RBI single by Lindsey.
Hamline was held scoreless for five straight innings until getting on the board in the bottom of the sixth.
Sul Ross had six hits to match Hamline's six.
Lindsey finished 2 for 3 with two singles and an RBI. Karels went 1 for 3 with a single and a run scored.
Aaron Morales went 1 for 3 with a single.
"Offense today was at a minimum, but we did enough," added Gallego. "Offense isn't always about hitting. It's about executing the bunt, manufacturing runs and they did it."
Starting pitcher
Dawson Beard tossed a three-hitter in five scoreless innings while he also tallied four strikeouts.
Aidan Mow came in to relieve one inning as he allowed three hits and one earned run.
Ian Craigie picked up his second save after he struck out two batters and did not allow a single hit in one inning.
"It was a great day today. Arm felt good. Everything was working really well," said Beard. "My defense worked well behind me. The bats were there.
"Everything has to come together to win a baseball game and we did that today."
Craigie added: "Bullpen's been great. Everybody's coming in doing their job getting goose eggs when they need to and giving our offense a chance to score runs and win games."
