LONGVIEW — It was the second-to-last game of the season for the Sul Ross State men's basketball team.
The Lobos fought hard, but came out on the wrong end of a 78-68 loss to the LeTourneau Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon at the Solheim Arena.
Sul Ross started off the game on a 5-0 run after a three-pointer from
Bryson Laird and a jumper by
Eli Gonzalez.
LeTourneau went on an 8-2 run to claim the lead with 16:03 on the clock.
The Yellowjackets led by as much as 13 points in the opening half before
Luke Pluymen hit a three-pointer five seconds before the end of the half to put the Lobos behind by 10.
Sul Ross cut the deficit to eight on two different occasions in the second half, but the Yellowjackets surged to a 16-point lead with 6:42 to go in the game.
The Lobos fought back to trail by seven after
Gabe Sanchez knocked down a three-pointer during a 6-0 run.
LeTourneau then went ahead by nine before
Domonique Wilkins made a layup with 56 seconds to go to cut the deficit back down to seven.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to pull off the comeback.
Pluymen led the Lobos with 16 points while
Vince Peralez,
Caelyb Kerley and
Jordan Rhyne each chipped in with eight points.
Laird added with seven points and Sanchez added with six points.
The Lobos knocked down eight 3-pointers while shooting 6 of 10 from the free throw line.
Daveone Bass grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and eight assists while Rhyne and Kerley each had six boards. Sul Ross finished with 38 rebounds.
Sul Ross got 43 points from the bench and 36 points from within the paint. The Lobos hope to end their six-game losing streak during the season finale on Feb. 18.
