WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos drop nail-biter to Northern New Mexico College

The Sul Ross State women's basketball team was seeking to extend its winning streak Tuesday afternoon against the Northern New Mexico College Eagles.

Up by as much as nine in the second half, the Lobos came up short and the Eagles were able to pull out the 67-62 victory at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sul Ross State got off to a 6-0 lead. Marley Rokas scored the first four points of the contest.

The Eagles used a 6-0 run which tied the game at six-all with 1:37 on the clock.

Victoria Aguayo gave the Lobos the lead back after making four quick points to fuel a 6-0 run that also included a steal and a bucket in the paint from Cheyanne Bonilla.

Northern New Mexico got a floater from Miranda Salazar as time expired to trail by four.

The Eagles began the second quarter with two quick three-pointers from Lila Ashida to put themselves up 14-12.

Aguayo went to the line and then made two free throws to tie the game.

Salazar put the Eagles back ahead by two as she started a 6-0 run that increased her teams lead to six.

Putting together a 7-0 run fueled by a clutch three from Bonilla, the Lobos held a one-point lead with 37 seconds to go in the first half.

The Eagles managed to get a layup with 10 seconds on the clock to take a one-point lead into the locker room at the break.

Northern New Mexico outscored the Lobos, 16-11, in the second quarter.

Rokas got the Lobos a 25-24 lead as she grabbed a steal and finished the turnover with a jumper off an assist from Emily Bunger.

The Eagles immediately answered back with a jumper in the paint to take a one-point lead.

Aguayo then shifted the momentum back to the Lobos with a made jumper, making the score 27-26.

Northern New Mexico went on a 4-0 run to lead by three at the 7:54 mark.

The Lobos went off on a 9-0 run that featured a clutch three by Ariana Escalante, which gave her team a six-point lead.

A three from Lauren Hicks cut the deficit in half for the Eagles with 4:19 to go.

Caitlyn Corley responded with a jumper on a dish by Rokas to make the Lobo lead five points.

Northern New Mexico was within four until Kayley Diaz hit a three-pointer to make the score 44-37 with 1:32 on the clock.

With a 4-0 run, the Eagles cut the deficit to three before Escalante made two free throws to end the third quarter.

The Lobos went up by nine in the fourth quarter after starting things off with a layup by Rokas and a two from Escalante.

Northern New Mexico went on a 12-0 run to take a five-point lead with 4:26 on the clock.

Sul Ross State took the lead back with a 6-0 run, which included four points by Diaz.

Using a three and a layup, Northern New Mexico gained a four-point lead at the 1:08 mark. The Eagles led by as much as seven late in the fourth quarter.

Corley knocked down a three to cut the deficit to four, but time wasn't on the side of the Lobos.

  • Rokas finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Aguayo and Diaz had 11 points each. Aguayo added with four steals, three blocks and eight rebounds while Diaz grabbed six boards.
