WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Sul Ross State falls to Texas Lutheran on the road

SEGUIN, Texas — It was the final game of the first half ahead of the Christmas break.

On Thursday afternoon, the Sul Ross State women's basketball team fell to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs, 81-58, at Memorial Gymnasium.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Bulldogs led off the game with an 8-0 run before Marley Rokas made a free throw to get Sul Ross State on the board with 5:01 on the clock.

Emily Bunger made a jumper in the paint to cut the deficit to five.

Texas Lutheran made three free throws to end the first quarter to extend its lead to eight.

The Lobos trailed by as much as 17 with 6:04 to go in the second quarter.

Using an 10-0 run, the Lobos managed to cut the deficit to seven. Kayley Diaz tallied five points during the run as she landed a three-pointer.

Texas Lutheran made a trey with 35 seconds on the clock to take a 12-point lead into the locker room at the break.

The Bulldogs outscored the Lobos, 25-14, in the third quarter to increase their lead to 23.

Sul Ross State went on an 8-0 in the fourth quarter to trail by 17, but the Bulldogs continued to have the hot hand on offense to extend their lead to 27 with 1:23 left to go in the game.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • Rokas led the way with 15 points, four rebounds and one steal.
  • Bunger had eight points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • Diaz tallied four assists and seven points.
  • Victoria Aguayo and Ariana Escalante each had six points. Aguayo also had six steals and four rebounds.
  • Cheyanne Bonilla and Caitlyn Corley each finished with four points. Bonilla grabbed five rebounds while Corley had four.
  • Jema Padilla, Koda Beltran, Ti'Miah Jackson-Allen and Cierra Zapata all scored two points each.
  • The Lobos went 18 for 24 from the free throw line. They also had 12 steals, 11 assists and 31 rebounds.
  • Sul Ross State had 22 points in the paint and 21 points off turnovers.
