VOLLEYBALL: Lobos battle Crusaders in four-set match

During the second-to-last home game of the 2023 season, the Sul Ross State volleyball team honored its three seniors Daniella Garcia, Loren Garcia and Tatyana Colon.

Caitlyn Pena, who will be graduating early, along with senior athletic trainers Naomi Elizondo and Vanessa Baeza were also recognized.

The Lobos left it all out on the court against the American Southwest Conference regular-season champion University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders on Friday night.

UMHB had only lost six sets in conference play entering the match.

Sul Ross State shocked the Crusaders with a 25-20 win in set two, but UMHB ended up coming away with the four-set win at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The opening set had nine different lead changes.

Trailing 7-6, the Lobos went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. A kill later on by Payton Miller made the score 11-9.

UMHB went ahead 14-12 and then the Lobos used another 4-0 run to take a two-point lead. Sarah Chavez had two kills and Cassandra Espinoza had one during the run.

The Crusaders ended up gaining some breathing room by closing out the set with a 6-0 run to take the set.

Suspense was plentiful in the second set which featured 12 lead changes.

After a back and forth start, the Crusaders went ahead 12-9 before Sul Ross State rallied back to tie the score at 12-all. Espinoza had two kills for the Lobos to get the score back to even.

UMHB took a two-point lead and then the momentum shifted back to the Lobos after they went up by one point.

As the momentum shifted back and forth once again, the Lobos evened the match by finishing on a 7-0 run.

Loren Garcia had two kills while Jayci Richters and Edie Coleman tallied one kill each during the run.

To start the third set, there were three lead changes until the Lobos went ahead 13-9 after kills from Loren Garcia and Coleman.

Sul Ross State was a point away from taking a two-set advantage in the match with a 24-22 lead.

The Crusaders ended up going on a 4-0 run to win the set, 26-24.

During the fourth set there were nine lead changes.

Sul Ross State trailed by one before the Crusaders used a 7-0 run to increase their lead to eight to eventually take the set, 25-18.

  • Loren Garcia led the Lobos with 13 kills.
  • Espinoza and Coleman each 12 kills.
  • Espinoza leads the team with 236 kills.
  • Espinoza had a double-double also tallying 18 digs. This was her seventh double-double of the season.
  • Coleman tallied three solo blocks.
  • Chavez added with six kills.
  • Pena finished with 13 digs while Colon had three assists and 14 digs.
  • Eliana Mata recorded a season-high 39 assists and nine digs.
  • The Lobos finished with four service aces from Colon, Loren Garcia, Brylee Sweeten and Pena.
