VOLLEYBALL: Lobos finish the 2023 season with a five-set win over Concordia

It was the final game of the season, and the Sul Ross State volleyball team ended with a victory.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lobos took down the Concordia University Tornados in five sets, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11, at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

In the opening set, Concordia led 3-0 before the Lobos used a 3-0 run fueled by two kills from Loren Garcia and Sarah Chavez and a service ace by Caitlyn Pena to tie up the score.

Concordia regained the lead at 4-3.

With two kills from Cassandra Espinoza and a kill by Pena, the Lobos went back on top, 6-4.

The Lobos at one point were up 8-6 until Concordia surged ahead with an 8-0 run to take a 16-9 lead.

Sul Ross State got to within three points on two occasions, but the Tornados came out victorious.

It was a different tone for the Lobos in the second set as they began on a 6-0. Garcia highlighted the offensive spree with two kills.

Jayci Richters put down a kill to put Sul Ross State up by eight later on.

A kill from Espinoza down the stretch put the Lobos ahead by nine as they ended up holding on to tie up the match.

After three early lead changes to begin the third set, the Lobos went up 8-6 after another kill by Richters.

Concordia went on a 5-0 run to get out on top, 11-8.

Sul Ross State kept things close using a 4-0 run to trail by two in the middle of the set. Edie Coleman tallied back-to-back kills during the run.

The Tornados used a 4-0 run of their own to make the score 22-16 as they eventually took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Trailing 5-1 to start the fourth set, the Lobos flipped the script using a 5-0 run to take a 6-5 lead before Concordia tied up the score at six-all.

Brylee Sweeten later gave the Lobos an 8-6 lead with a service ace.

Going on a 4-0 run, Sul Ross State took a seven-point lead and never looked back as they took the set to even up the match.

The fifth set started with three different lead changes until the Lobos broke a 3-3 tie with kills from Richters and Coleman.

Tatyana Colon later served up back-to-back aces to make the score 9-4.

Concordia cut the deficit to two, but Coleman scored three of the next four points with three kills to put the Lobos ahead 13-8.

Richters nailed down the final kill to give the Lobos the win.

  • Garcia, Coleman and Espinoza finished with 11 kills each.
  • Richters added with eight kills and Chavez had seven.
  • The Lobos had 10 service aces. Garcia had three while Colon, Sweeten and Pena had two each.
  • Chavez also finished with four solo blocks.
  • Eliana Mata had a season-high 40 assists to finish the season with 487 assists.
  • Mata tallied a double-double also recording 17 digs. This was Mata's 10th double-double of the season.
  • Espinoza finished as the Lobos' kill leader this season with 247 kills.
  • Pena also tallied 13 digs.
  • Colon finished with 21 digs. Colon finished the season with a team-high 348 digs.
  • Colon also finishes the season with a team-best 30 service aces.
