HOUSTON, Texas — On Saturday afternoon, the Sul Ross State women's basketball team notched its first win of the season with a 77-55 victory over Schreiner University at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The score was tied three times in the first quarter.
Sul Ross State broke an 18-18 tie with two free throws by
Victoria Aguayo with 17 seconds left in the opening stanza.
The Lobos went on to outscore Schreiner, 22-4, in the second quarter.
Sul Ross State began the second quarter with an 18-0 run.
Caitlyn Corley got the scoring started with a layup.
Morgan Peralez and
Marley Rokas scored six points each during the run.
Schreiner did not score until there were nearly two minutes left until halftime.
Ti'Miah Jackson-Allen closed out the first half with an offensive rebound that she turned into two points with a layup that gave the Lobos a 20-point lead.
Rokas scored 12 points in the first half while she grabbed six rebounds. Peralez had 10 points and four rebounds.
Victoria Aguayo added with eight points, three steals and three rebounds.
The Sul Ross State offense continued its consistency into the third quarter by outscoring Schreiner, 18-9.
At the start of the second half, the Lobos went on a 6-0 run that featured four points from Peralez and layup by Corley.
Everything was clicking for the Lobos as
Kayley Diaz made a jumper and then snagged a steal to score with a layup on the fast break giving Sul Ross State a 33-point lead with 3:15 on the clock.
Sul Ross State led by as much as 35 points with 8:13 to go in the contest after going on a 6-0 run that was highlighted by points in the paint by Rokas,
Cheyanne Bonilla and Corley.
Peralez and Corley both scored eight points in the second half. Aguayo contributed with five rebounds.
