WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Sul Ross State wins second-straight game with 62-54 victory over St. Thomas (Texas)

HOUSTON, Texas — Four Lobos scored in double digits Sunday afternoon as the Sul Ross State women's basketball team held on to defeat the University of St. Thomas (Texas), 62-54, at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center.

The Lobos have now won two games in a row.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

There were three lead changes to start the first quarter.

Using a 10-0 run, the Lobos went ahead by seven with 2:27 on the clock. Cheyanne Bonilla and Emily Bunger highlighted the run with a pair of three-pointers.

Sul Ross State led by as much as nine after a layup from Victoria Aguayo with 1:15 to go.

St. Thomas made two free throws to trail by six at the end of one.

The Lobos began the second quarter on a 5-0 run that started with a layup by Marley Rokas.

After a made free throw by Ariana Escalante, Sul Ross State led by 11 with just 34 seconds remaining until halftime.

St. Thomas closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit down to seven.

The momentum then went in favor of St. Thomas in the second half as it tied up the game at 36-all with seven minutes on the clock.

St. Thomas took a brief two-point lead before the Lobos tied up the score at 38-all with a layup by Morgan Peralez.

Sul Ross State went ahead by two on a layup by Aguayo. St. Thomas put together a 5-0 run to lead, 43-40, with 2:39 to go in the third quarter.

The Lobos tied up the score on a three-point play by Aguayo who was fouled on a made layup.

With the score tied at 43-all to start the fourth quarter, the Lobos went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead by six points.

St. Thomas cut the deficit down to four with 4:40 left to go.

Bonilla knocked down a clutch three-pointer to start a 5-0 run that helped the Lobos extend their lead to nine points.

The Lobo lead was cut back down to four until Rokas scored the final four points of the contest to help her team pull away for the win.

"It was a tough game against St. Thomas, but we came out with the win. Our players fought all the way to the end. It was a tough rotation for the post, but Emily stepped up. Victoria guarded the best player and did a great job. Cheyanne made two three's during crunch time. Her calmness helped this team. We shot free throws better today.   • Peralez grabbed nine rebounds and scored 14 points.
  • Bonilla tallied 13 points, two assists and five rebounds.

  • The Lobos grabbed 39 rebounds and tallied 11 steals.
  • Sul Ross State shot 16 of 19 from the free throw line. Rokas went 5 for 5.
