PREVIEW: Sul Ross football aims for improvement in Week 2

Lobos take on Texas A&-Kingsville on Saturday

If the Sul Ross State football program wants to live by its motto of "Burn the Ships," then things have to turnaround for the better in Week 2.

Last week's trip to San Antonio served as an eye opener for the Lobos after dropping to ninth-ranked Trinity University.

This Saturday, Sul Ross has another tough road task in the form of Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"The biggest thing is that we got to prepare with an edge," said Sul Ross interim head coach Barry Derickson. "All of our coaches are on edge right now. This is a very good measure for our program."

>> HEAD TO HEAD: The Lobos have a long history with Texas A&M-Kingsville as both teams used to compete in the Lone Star Conference.

This is the 39th meeting between both schools, the first since Sept. 14, 2019.

The Javelinas lead the series 29-7-1. The Lobos last defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville back on Oct. 13, 1973, by a score of 10-7.

Sul Ross also tallied a victory over the Javelinas on Nov. 1, 1969, in a nail-biting 13-12 decision.

Since 2011, this is the eighth time that Sul Ross has played against an NCAA Division II program. The Lobos last defeated a Division II opponent on Sept. 2, 2017, which was a 47-22 decision over UTPB.

>> THE JAVELINAS: Under second-year head coach Mike Salinas, Texas A&M-Kingsville is coming off a 60-0 win over NAIA opponent North American University in Week 1.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jacob Cavazos completed 11 of 15 passes for 210 yards with one touchdown.

Cavazos utilized 11 different receivers. Sophomore Jason Gaines led the receiving corps, grabbing five catches for 85 yards.

Jason Mackey along with junior transfer Jaylin Smith combined for two touchdown catches and 81 yards.

Running back Toneil Carter ran for 112 yards on six carries while scoring twice. The Javelinas tallied 287 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side, Texas A&M-Kingsville grabbed four interceptions. Defensive back Darian Mayberry had two interceptions for 49 yards.

>> TEAM OUTLOOK: When the Lobos are in sync, good things can happen.

Sul Ross had some moments of brilliance, on both offense and defense, at times against Trinity. This week consistency will be key.

"I better see the response this week in an extremely positive light," added Derickson. "They all know that's not the product that we want to put on the field."
