Comets notch sweep of Lobos

Lobos fight hard in third set, but come up short

RICHARDSON — On Saturday afternoon, the Sul Ross State volleyball team tried to rebound with a win over the number one team in the American Southwest Conference.

Unfortunately, Sul Ross couldn't prevail.

The University of Texas at Dallas was able to notch the sweep of the Lobos, 25-21, 25-13, 26-24, at the UTD Activity Center.

Sul Ross trailed 4-1 early in the first set. The Comets were up 10-7 until the Lobos battled back to tie the score at 10-all.

The score was tied once more at 12-all. Taking advantage of an attacking error and a kill by Daniella Garcia, Sul Ross led 14-12.

There were three more lead changes before the Comets closed out the set with a 5-1 run to capture the win.

The Lobos were out of system during the second set, which allowed UT-Dallas to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

UT-Dallas grew its lead to eight points before Sul Ross chiseled down the deficit to four after a service ace by Faith Herrera.

The Comets led by as much as 10 in the middle of the set.

Sul Ross then trailed by 12 late in the game. UT-Dallas closed out the set with a 3-0 run to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

To start the third set, there were three early lead changes before the Comets used a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead.

Sul Ross came back to tie the game down the stretch at 15-all with a service ace from Tatyana Colon. After another ace by Colon, the Lobos held a one-point lead.

It was a dramatic finish as there were six lead changes. The Lobos didn't want to go down without a fight.

A kill by Annika Canaba tied up the game at 24-all. Ultimately, the Comets got two clutch kills to pull away to get the sweep.

Canaba tallied eight kills, 11 assists and five digs while Taryn Griner and Garcia each finished with seven kills.

Griner, Garcia and Canaba accounted for four of the Lobos' six block assists.

Kamrynn Caruth added with 12 assists, two service aces and five digs while Colon served up three aces. Herrera led the defense with nine digs.
