LeTourneau outlasts Sul Ross in five-set thriller

Canaba tallied a triple-double with 20 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs

LONGVIEW — Trying to extend the win streak to three games, the Sul Ross State volleyball team made the long trek to east Texas to take on LeTourneau University on Friday night.

The match had the makings of another sweep by the Lobos until LeTourneau battled back to win the next two sets to send the game into a deciding fifth set.

LeTourneau outlasted the Lobos 15-13 to take the match.

Sul Ross led 16-14 in the middle of the first after enduring eight different lead changes. The Yellowjackets came back to tie the game at 18-all.

Two kills by Annika Canaba and another kill by Loren Garcia helped fuel a 4-0 run by the Lobos. Canaba ended up tallying three kills in the rally.

LeTourneau chiseled the deficit down to two before Kamrynn Caruth got a clutch kill to put the Lobos ahead by three.

Taking advantage of an attacking error and another kill by Canaba, the Lobos captured the first set, 25-22.

Sparked by a kill from Cassandra Espinoza, the Lobos went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-5 lead in the middle of the second set.

Faith Herrera tallied back-to-back service aces during the rally.

Sul Ross extended its lead to six with another kill by Garcia. Canaba later delivered two straight kills to make the score 15-8.

The Lobos put together a 4-0 run fueled by two kills from Canaba and a service ace by Tatyana Colon to increase their lead to 10.

Sul Ross finished the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-14 to lead the match 2-0.

Early in the third set, the Lobos had a 7-5 lead before the Yellowjackets tied the game at seven-all. The Lobos regained the lead after a service error.

LeTourneau then went on a 3-0 run. From that point on, the Yellowjackets held the lead up until late in the set when the Lobos tied the score at 20-all.

The Yellowjackets closed out the set with a 5-0 run to claim the game, 25-20.

Sul Ross started off the fourth set with a 3-0 lead after three-straight service aces by Caruth.

LeTourneau went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead.

The momentum then shifted back toward the Lobos after a kill by Taryn Griner made the score 10-7 in favor of Sul Ross.

LeTourneau then used a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead before the Lobos tied up the score at 16-all.

The Yellowjackets closed out the set on a 9-2 run to force a fifth set.

Sul Ross led 5-3 early in the game until the Yellowjackets tied up the score.

There were six different lead changes until the ball bounced in LeTourneau's favor as it pulled away for the 15-13 win to capture the victory.

Canaba had a triple-double with 20 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs while Griner ended up with 13 kills and one blocked shot.

Garcia added with 10 kills.

Caruth tallied 27 assists and four service aces while Herrera had 20 digs and three service aces.
