ALPINE, Texas - Softball began their final conference series of the regular season with a doubleheader split on Friday, winning 8-0 before falling 9-4 against Hardin-Simmons.
"I'm proud of our team today," said head coach
Troy Canaba. "We played well both games but just made too many mistakes in game two. You can't do that with good teams."
Game 1: Sul Ross 8, Hardin-Simmons 0 (6 innings)
Camryn Hardin took advantage of a throwing error to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead after one.

Payslee Sims single brought in
Samantha Chavez to extend the lead to 2-0 in the third.
Jenna Spencer later came around on a fielding error to give Sully a 3-0 lead after three.
Chavez laid down a bunt that eventually scored
Veronica Rodriguez after an error.
Annika Canaba then kept it going with an RBI single that scored Hardin to extend the Lobo lead to 5-0 after four.
Still 5-0 in the sixth,
Nadia Valverde grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in Rodriguez. Sims then singled to left to bring in both Chavez and Canaba for an 8-0 final.
Jodie Vaughn was in the circle for game one. She allowed just three baserunners on two hits and tallied seven strikeouts.
Game 2: Hardin-Simmons 9, Sul Ross 4
HSU got going early, plating two runs in the opening inning.
Valverde started a four-run fourth with an RBI single to bring in Chavez. An error allowed later allowed Canaba to score for a 2-2 tie.
Alejandra Ruedas gave Sully the lead with a single to plate Spencer.
Jaelyn Zuniga then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Sims to score and give the Lobos a 4-2 lead after one.
The Cowgirls got one back in the second and added three more in the third to take a 6-4 lead after three. They went on to get three more in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-4, which eventually went final.
Danielle Gomez started game two, going 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Hunter Montes went the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts.
With the split, the Lobos now sit at 21-18 (14-15 ASC). Hardin-Simmons moves to 27-12 (18-11 ASC).
Sully and HSU return to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. from Lobo Field.
