Lobos clinch #5 spot in ASC Tournament with Saturday win over Hardin-Simmons

By Justin Corbett

ALPINE, Texas - Softball concluded their regular season Saturday with a 12-5 win over Hardin-Simmons.

The Lobos will now enter the American Southwest Conference Tournament as the #5 seed.

"It was a great weekend!" said head coach Troy Canaba. "This team is playing well right now. I'm so excited for the tournament. We will enjoy this for a little while and begin to prepare."

Hardin-Simmons gained an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.

The Lobos responded with a five-run bottom of the first. Samantha Chavez started it off with a single to plate Camryn Hardin. Nadia Valverde gave Sully their first lead with a three-run home run to left, scoring Chavez and Annika Canaba. Alejandra Ruedas later singled to center to bring home Payslee Sims for a 5-1 lead after one.

The Cowgirl offense again mustered a run to cut the Lobo lead to 5-2 after their half of the second.

Canaba hit a double to bring in Chavez and get the run back in the bottom of the second.

Hardin-Simmons cut it back to three with another in the top of the third.

Jaelyn Zuniga doubled down the right field line to bring around Ruedas to start a two-run third. Veronica Rodriguez then lined a single back up the middle to bring in Zuniga and give Sully an 8-3 lead after three.

The Cowgirls got one back in the fourth, but a Rodriguez sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Jocelyn Gonzales to extend the lead to 9-4 after five.

Hardin-Simmons got one back in the top of the sixth for a 9-5 score.

Canaba singled and Chavez later scored on an error to open a three-run inning. Sims later grounded into a fielder's choice that brought in Canaba. Ruedas soon singled home Lisbeth Dominguez for a 12-5 lead that eventually went final

Jodie Vaughn started on the mound and went all seven innings with three strikeouts.

The Lobos finish the regular season 22-18 (15-15 ASC). Hardin-Simmons ends at 27-13 (18-12 ASC).

Sully will be back in action next week for the ASC Tournament beginning on Thursday. They'll play #8 LeTourneau at 1:00 p.m. in Cleveland, MS.
