CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas - Baseball fell 15-8 and 9-7 in Thursday's doubleheader with University of the Ozarks.
"We had to go to the pen in the second inning of game one as Russell (Sam) was dealing with tightness or soreness," said head coach
Bobby Mesker. "It just kind of set the tone for the day. Ozarks took the momentum and we didn't have a lead all day. Tip of the hat to them as they got two quality starts with their backs up against the wall in the biggest series of the year."
Game 1: Ozarks 15, Sul Ross 8 (7 innings)
Carsen Thor got the Lobos on the board with a solo home run to left field in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Ozarks answered with five in the bottom of the third for an 8-1 lead.
Thor belted his second home run of the night, this time a three-run shot, to make it 8-4.
The Eagles got it to 11-4 with three more in the bottom of the fourth.
Thor singled around
Estevan Ortiz in the fifth to start a three-run fifth.
Tye Lindsey then brought in
Tristan Karels on a sacrifice fly before
Peyten Kennard singled in
Jared Lorenz to make it 11-7.
Ozarks scored four of the final five of the game for the 15-8 win.
Thor finished 4-for-4 for a game-high in hits. He also led the way with five RBI.
Game 2: Ozarks 9, Sul Ross 7
Sully fell behind 8-0 through three but answered back with six runs between the fifth and sixth innings.
Jared Roiz and Ortiz had RBI singles in the fifth to cut it to 8-2. Kennard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth before Roiz walked in another run.
Orlando Moreno then doubled around Kennard to make it 8-6.
Ozarks scored one in the bottom of the seventh to up it to 9-6.
The Lobos cut it to 9-7 in the top of the ninth on a Lindsey sacrifice fly, but that's as close as they got again in the two-run loss.
Sully now stands at 12-17 and 9-14 in conference. Ozarks moves to 10-21 and 9-14.
Both sides conclude the series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Clarksville.
