Wheeler's Saturday walk-off sweeps McMurry in 18-17 win

ALPINE, Texas - Matthew Wheeler plated Tristan Karels in the eleventh inning on Saturday for an 18-17 win and sweep of McMurry.

McMurry scored the first three in the top of the first before Sully quickly took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jorge Marquez got the first run on the board with an RBI groundout to score Jared Roiz. Carsen Thor later scored on an single by Jared Lorenz. Lorenz scored on an error to tie the game before Tye Lindsey came around on an RBI double from Tristan Karels to take the lead. The final run of the first came on a single by Esai Prieto to score Karels for a 5-3 advantage.

The War Hawks retook the lead with three in the top of the second. Lorenz quickly gave the Lobos the advantage again with a two-run home run for a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the second.

Three more runs came across for McMurry in the third for a 9-7 lead. An error in the bottom of the third scored Ortiz and Estevan Prieto for a 9-9 tie.

The Lobos retook the lead in the top of the fifth on an error that scored Thor. Lorenz then stepped in and hit a three-run shot for a 13-9 advantage.

McMurry crept back with two runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 13-12 game. Marquez sacrificed Ortiz around in the bottom of the sixth for a 14-12 lead.

Karels upped the advantage to 15-12 with a homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Thor plated Marquez on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth before Peyten Kennard reached on an error to score Thor for a 17-12 lead going to the ninth.

The War Hawks came back with five runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

After a scoreless tenth, Isaac Gallego retired the side in order in the top of the eleventh. Karels led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Kennard then stepped in and bunted Karels to second. Matthew Wheeler then replaced Prieto and singled home Karels for the 18-17 walk-off win.

Lorenz finished with four hits, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored.

Karels also had four hits, scored three runs and had two RBI.

Ortiz, Thor and Roiz each scored three runs.

Gallego picked up the win after 2.1 innings of shutout ball. He surrendered one hit with three strikeouts.

The Lobos improve to 3-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. McMurry falls to 2-4 and 0-3.

Sully next travels to Austin for a doubleheader with Concordia on Friday, February 18.
