ABILENE — The Sul Ross State men's basketball team captured their first American Southwest Conference victory on Thursday night with a 90-83 win over the McMurry War Hawks at the Kimbrell Arena.
Sul Ross went on a 9-0 to begin the first half.
Luke Pluymen started the surge with a layup and then a steal by
Hayden Peterson led to a layup by
Trey Nelson.
Christian Nevarez then scored on the fast break with a layup while Nelson answered with a three-pointer.
The Lobos were in control with 14:47 on the clock as they held a 31-8 lead.
McMurry got on track and chiseled down the deficit to seven points with 39 seconds to go until the break.
Nelson landed another clutch three to put the Lobos on top by 10 at halftime.
Sul Ross knocked down eight 3-pointers in the first half.
The War Hawks made things interesting in the second half, trailing by four after a three-pointer by Remy Minor with 16:08 on the clock.
A layup by
Larry Morrison off an assist by
Julian Paredes gave the Lobos an eight-point lead.
Morrison then helped the Lobos extend their lead to 12 points with 12:31 remaining by making another layup.
The War Hawks flipped the script during the final stretch of the game by fighting all the way back to take a 78-77 lead with 4:04 left.
McMurry led by as much as four points before the Lobos rallied back.
The comeback was fueled by a layup from Pluymen and then Paredes knocked down a clutch three-pointer to give Sul Ross a one-point lead.
McMurry regained the lead on a layup by Elijah Lomas with 2:04 on the clock.
A steal by Morrison led to a layup made by Nelson to give the lead back to Sul Ross. Nelson then extended the Lobos' lead to three with 40 seconds to go.
Nelson scored the final eight points of the game to help Sul Ross edge out the War Hawks. Four of the eight points came in the form of free throws.
Nelson tallied 25 points, seven assists and seven rebounds while Paredes had 19 points and eight boards.
Nevarez chipped in with 12 points and Morrison finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Lobos finished with 10 three-pointers while they shot 8 for 13 from the free throw line. Nelson went 5 for 6 from the charity stripe.
Sul Ross grabbed 38 rebounds and also had 12 steals. Paredes finished with four steals on the night.
