ABILENE — The Sul Ross State men's basketball team was hoping to keep the momentum rolling.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys clipped the Lobos, 79-60, at the Mabee Complex.
Hardin-Simmons started off on a 5-0 run before the Lobos got to within two after
Julian Paredes got five quick points with a jumper and a three-pointer.
A three by
Christian Nevarez put Sul Ross on top 8-7. Paredes answered back with another clutch three-pointer to give his team a four-point lead with 15:03 on the clock.
The Lobos had led by as much as seven after a layup by
Vince Peralez with 7:31 remaining in the opening half.
Momentum then shifted over to the Cowboys as they flipped the script to take a 27-21 lead at the break.
Hardin-Simmons outscored Sul Ross, 52-39, in the second half to secure the victory.
Sul Ross attempted a comeback during the second half as it trailed by as little as six points after being down by 19.
Nevarez led the way scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds while Paredes added with 11 points, seven boards and five assists.
Trey Nelson and
Caelyb Kerley each finished with nine points.
Gabe Sanchez chipped in with seven points.
The Lobos were out-rebounded, 45-33. Sul Ross knocked down 10 three-pointers as Nevarez and Kerley combined for six shots made from beyond the arc.
