KERRVILLE —Behind 25 points from
Julian Paredes, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team edged past the Schreiner University Mountaineers, 75-66, on Wednesday night at the Stephens Family Arena.
The lead changed 11 times throughout the contest.
Sul Ross held an 8-4 lead early in the first half before Schreiner gained a one-point lead.
A jumper by
Trey Nelson put the Lobos back ahead with 16:10 in the first half. The Mountaineers then regained the lead by one with a layup.
Luke Pluymen tied up the game at 11-all by making a free throw.
Paredes and
Caelyb Kerley made a pair of three-pointers to give Sul Ross a six-point lead with 12:55 remaining.
Schreiner battled back to eventually take a five-point lead with 7:50 on the clock.
The Lobos' offense went cold as the Mountaineers extended their lead to 11 at the break.
Pluymen started off the second half by landing a three. Nelson then followed up with another clutch three to cut the deficit to five.
The Mountaineers then extended their lead to eight before the Lobos surmounted a comeback with 17:13 on the clock.
Nelson made a jumper in the paint. Pluymen grabbed a steal that led to a layup by
Christian Nevarez that got Sul Ross to within four.
Paredes hit a jumper to make the score 44-41. Pluymen then landed another shot in the paint off a dish by Paredes to cut the deficit to one with 15:29 remaining.
Nevarez put the Lobos ahead with a layup, but Schreiner answered back with a layup of its own to take a one-point lead.
The lead went back to the Lobos after a jumper by Paredes. Pluymen extended the lead with another layup with 12:36 on the clock.
Schreiner cut the deficit down to as little as two with 11:11 to go.
A steal by Nelson gave the Lobos a layup by Kerley. Paredes later landed another clutch shot from beyond the arc to extend the lead to seven.
Paredes also finished with six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals. Nelson added with 18 points, five assists and nine boards.
Pluymen chipped in with eight points.
Sul Ross finished with eight 3-pointers as Paredes knocked down four. The Lobos shot 9 for 13 from the free throw line.
Schreiner narrowly won the battle on the boards by grabbing 40 rebounds to the 35 pulled down by the Lobos.
Sul Ross had 24 points come off turnovers. The Mountaineers dropped their fourth-straight game.
