BELTON — The Sul Ross State men's basketball team was trying to start a winning streak for the first time this season.
On Friday afternoon, the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves edged out the Lobos, 84-80, at the Mayborn Campus Center.
Nebraska Wesleyan led 9-3 early in the first half until
Julian Paredes hit a three-pointer and
Trey Nelson followed with a jumper to cut the deficit to one.
The Lobos got three straight 3-pointers as
Luke Pluymen had two and
Christian Nevarez had one to put them out ahead by eight.
Sul Ross led by as much as 12 in the first half.
The Prairie Wolves got to within five before Pluymen nailed another three to give the Lobos an eight-point lead at the break.
Nebraska Wesleyan outscored Sul Ross, 50-38, in the second half.
Using a big three-pointer, the Prairie Wolves came all the way back to lead 44-42 with 17:08 in the second half.
Pluymen answered with another three to give Sul Ross a one-point lead.
The Lobos grew their lead to six with 13:15 to go.
Nebraska Wesleyan fought back to tie the game at 59-all. The game was tied twice more until the Prairie Wolves pulled away for the win.
Pluymen led the way with 23 points while Paredes finished with 21 points and seven assists.
Nelson added with 14 points.
Sul Ross made 15 three-pointers as Pluymen had seven while Paredes made five.
Nebraska Wesleyan dominated the glass by out-rebounding the Lobos, 37-25.
The lead changed 12 times and the game was tied up six times.
