MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos return home, drop to LeTourneau 80-72

Trey Nelson leads the way with 29 points

The Sul Ross State men's basketball team was back at home for the first time in 44 days since the upset of Trinity University on Nov. 23.

Sul Ross took on the LeTourneau Yellowjackets at the Pete P. Gallego Center on Thursday night.

The Lobos looked like they were going to notch their first win over LeTourneau since Dec. 9, 2017. LeTourneau had won the previous six meetings.

Sul Ross led 41-37 at the break, but the offense failed to make the key layups during the second half as the Yellowjackets claimed the 80-72 victory.

LeTourneau outscored the Lobos, 43-31, in the second half.

Trey Nelson led Sul Ross with 29 points while Julian Paredes chipped in with 14. Christian Nevarez added with 13 points.

Luke Pluymen tallied 11 points.

Sul Ross knocked down eight 3-pointers in the opening half while it went 9 of 30 from the field in the second half. Nelson, Nevarez and Pluymen all made three 3-pointers.

The Yellowjackets won the battle on the boards by grabbing 44 rebounds while the Lobos tallied 27. Nelson grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Sul Ross shot 13 of 16 from the free throw line.

The Lobos have dropped two in a row as they fall into second-to-last place in the American Southwest Conference standings.
