MEN'S BASKETBALL: Pirates defeat Lobos, 73-60

Paredes scores 16 points for Sul Ross

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Sul Ross State men's basketball continued its busy week by taking on the Whitworth University Pirates on Thursday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates ended up defeating the Lobos, 73-60.

Whitworth led by eight points early in the first half before Julian Paredes landed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five.

The Pirates then extended their lead to 11 points with 12:36 on the clock.

A layup by Daveone Bass and another three from Paredes made the score 17-12. Whitworth went back up by 10 with 9:55 to go in the first half.

Caelyb Kerley got the Lobos within four after hitting two clutch three-pointers.

Sul Ross battled all the way back to make the score 24-23 after Vince Peralez made a layup off an assist by Kerley with 3:51 to go.

The Pirates then went ahead by eight until the Lobos fought back to trail by three after a jumper by Peralez and a three from Luke Pluymen with 1:04 on the clock.

Whitworth got a three-pointer just before the end of the first half to take a six-point lead into the locker room.

During the second half, the Pirates led by as much as 21 until the Lobos chiseled down the deficit to 14 with a three by Paredes.

Paredes led the Lobos with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Kerley added with 11 points and one assist.

Peralez chipped in with eight points and seven boards.

Sul Ross grabbed 31 rebounds while shooting 10 for 20 from the free throw line. The Lobos knocked down eight shots from beyond the arc.
