When a team hits a rut during a tough stretch they can easily fold and fall apart.
Not the Lobos.
Now, the Sul Ross State volleyball team has won two in a row after notching a sweep of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets, 25-12, 25-13, 25-13, on Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
This is the sixth sweep of the season for the Lobos, second against Howard Payne.
"We had a lot of hustle. We haven't had that the last couple weeks," said Sul Ross head coach
Troy Canaba. "Wins and losses are good, but I want them to play right, play hard and let whatever happens happen."
Sul Ross showed its dominance early starting off with a 7-0 run in the first set.
Annika Canaba had three kills during the big run while
Edie Coleman and
Loren Garcia each had one kill.
Kamrynn Caruth added to the offensive spree with a service ace.
Faith Herrera extended the Lobos' lead to 10-1 with a service ace.
Sul Ross led by 11 after a kill by
Victoria Flores.
The Lobos went on a 3-0 run fueled by a kill from
Cassandra Espinoza, which made the score 19-9.
Sul Ross closed out the game on a 6-0 run. Espinoza had a kill and a service ace while
Taryn Griner notched a clutch kill during the big rally.
Much like the opening set, Sul Ross had a quick start with a 7-0 lead in the second game. Griner started the rally off with a kill while Caruth had a pair of service aces.
In the middle of the set, the Lobos were up 12-7 after another kill from Griner.
Sul Ross used a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 10.
Tatyana Colon had two service aces during the rally.
A kill by Canaba put the finishing touches on the second set to give the Lobos a 2-0 advantage in the match.
After starting off with a 3-0 lead, Sul Ross used a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to lead by a score of 16-7.
Flores tallied two kills during the rally.
Two kills by Canaba fueled a 3-0 run to make the score 20-9. A kill from Griner later helped give the Lobos the sweep.
Canaba led the way with 14 kills while Griner had seven kills. Flores and Espinoza each tallied five kills.
Herrera had 13 digs, three assists and two service aces while Caruth had 15 assists, five service aces and 11 digs.
Canaba and Griner have been huge throughout the season on offense. The dynamic duo has accounted for 319 kills on the season so far.
When the Lobos serve and receive well and the defense plays solidly, it makes the duo's job even easier.
"They do a really good job. You know that if they get the ball they're going to do something with it," said
Troy Canaba.

"We need to have some confidence. These wins kind of boost us a little bit," added
Troy Canaba. "We'll take these past couple of wins and kind of try to build on it."
