BELTON — On Tuesday night, the Sul Ross State volleyball team dropped a four-set match to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders, 19-25, 12-25, 25-21, 10-25, at the Mayborn Campus Center.
There were eight different lead changes in the opening set.
Sul Ross had a slight 5-3 lead after a kill from
Annika Canaba. The Lobos had led by as much as three points early with a service ace by
Tatyana Colon.
The Crusaders used a 4-0 run to take a 13-11 lead before Sul Ross rallied back to lead by one after a service ace from
Cassandra Espinoza.
From that point the momentum shifted back and forth.
After a kill by
Taryn Griner, the Lobos led 19-17 until Mary Hardin-Baylor closed out the game with an 8-0 run.
The second set started off close as Sul Ross held a 3-1 lead.
There were five more lead changes. The Lobos were up 11-9 after a kill from
Daniella Garcia.
Mary Hardin-Baylor then put together a 12-0 run to come away with the 25-12 victory, taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Sul Ross did not go down quietly.
The Lobos trailed 14-11 in the middle of the third set. Sul Ross went on a 6-1 run that was highlighted by some clutch kills by Canaba, Griner and
Loren Garcia.
Mary Hardin-Baylor trailed 22-20 late in the set until the Lobos went on a run after two kills by Canaba and another kill from
Loren Garcia to pull away with the four-point win to avoid the sweep.
The Crusaders began the final set with a 6-1 lead.
Mary Hardin-Baylor showed its dominance using a 5-0 run to make the score 20-7. The deficit was too large for the Lobos to surmount a comeback.
Canaba tallied her fourth triple-double of the season by finishing with 17 kills, 16 assists and 10 digs. Griner added with nine kills.
Loren Garcia and
Daniella Garcia each finished with six kills. Defensively,
Faith Herrera tallied 22 digs.
Kamrynn Caruth had 23 assists and eight digs.
