Crusaders defeat Lobos in four sets

Canaba tallied a triple-double

BELTON — On Tuesday night, the Sul Ross State volleyball team dropped a four-set match to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders, 19-25, 12-25, 25-21, 10-25, at the Mayborn Campus Center.

There were eight different lead changes in the opening set.

Sul Ross had a slight 5-3 lead after a kill from Annika Canaba. The Lobos had led by as much as three points early with a service ace by Tatyana Colon.

The Crusaders used a 4-0 run to take a 13-11 lead before Sul Ross rallied back to lead by one after a service ace from Cassandra Espinoza.

From that point the momentum shifted back and forth.

After a kill by Taryn Griner, the Lobos led 19-17 until Mary Hardin-Baylor closed out the game with an 8-0 run.

The second set started off close as Sul Ross held a 3-1 lead.

There were five more lead changes. The Lobos were up 11-9 after a kill from Daniella Garcia.

Mary Hardin-Baylor then put together a 12-0 run to come away with the 25-12 victory, taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Sul Ross did not go down quietly.

The Lobos trailed 14-11 in the middle of the third set. Sul Ross went on a 6-1 run that was highlighted by some clutch kills by Canaba, Griner and Loren Garcia.

Mary Hardin-Baylor trailed 22-20 late in the set until the Lobos went on a run after two kills by Canaba and another kill from Loren Garcia to pull away with the four-point win to avoid the sweep.

The Crusaders began the final set with a 6-1 lead.

Mary Hardin-Baylor showed its dominance using a 5-0 run to make the score 20-7. The deficit was too large for the Lobos to surmount a comeback.
