For one set the Sul Ross State volleyball team looked phenomenal.
And then the match went lopsided despite a heart-pounding third set.
In the end, the Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls walked away with the four-set win, 14-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-15, Friday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
With the game tied at three-all to start the opening set, the Lobos used a 5-0 run that was highlighted by two service aces from
Tatyana Colon and a clutch kill by
Victoria Flores.
Sul Ross used a 4-0 run to make the score 17-8.
Faith Herrera added to the rally with a service ace while
Loren Garcia and Flores each had a pair of kills.
The Lobos rode the good wave of momentum by making the score 20-9. Sul Ross was able put away the Cowgirls by 10 points.
To start the second set, the tables turned in favor of Hardin-Simmons as it took a 7-0 lead.
Sul Ross was then in a hole, trailing 16-7.
Late in the game, the Lobos went on a 5-0 run as
Annika Canaba,
Loren Garcia and Flores nailed some clutch kills to cut the deficit to six.
Hardin-Simmons responded by going on a 5-0 run of its own to tie up the match.
The third set featured 13 different lead changes until the Cowgirls went on a 2-0 run to win 26-24 to take the lead in the match.
Sul Ross had trailed 24-21 before clawing its way back to tie the score at 24-all after kills by
Loren Garcia, Canaba and Griner.
In the final set, there were four different lead changes before Hardin-Simmons used a 6-0 run to lead 18-11.
The Cowgirls finished the game on a 6-1 run to win by 10.
Canaba led the Lobos with 15 kills and 14 assists while Griner and Flores each had nine kills.
Kamrynn Caruth added with 23 assists while Herrera had 15 digs.
