Comets defeat Lobos in four sets

Annika Canaba becomes the all-time leader in kills

It was a historic night for fifth-year senior Annika Canaba as she became the all-time leader in kills at Sul Ross State University.

Unfortunately, the Lobo volleyball team fell in four sets, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 12-25, to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets on Friday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

This is the sixth straight match that the Lobos have lost in four sets.

In the opening set, the Lobos looked solid against the regular-season conference champs.

Sul Ross led 14-9 after a kill by Loren Garcia.

After kills from Victoria Flores and Taryn Griner, the Lobos extended their lead to 20-13. The Comets fought back to within two, but Sul Ross prevailed with the win.

The second set began with six early lead changes until UT-Dallas pulled away with a 5-0 run.

UT-Dallas never looked back from that point to tie up the match.

Sul Ross started the third set with a 6-2 lead before the Comets fired off a 12-0 run to flip the script by taking a 14-6 lead.

The Comets closed out the game on a 4-0 run to take the 2-1 lead.

UT-Dallas led 19-9 in the middle of the fourth set as it never trailed in the game to eventually escape with the victory.

Canaba had a triple-double with 18 kills, 12 assists and 20 digs. Griner finished with seven kills while Cassandra Espinosa had six.

Kamrynn Caruth added with 19 assists and 11 digs while Faith Herrera tallied 20 digs and two service aces.
