Lobos defeat LeTourneau in five-set thriller

Canaba tallies 24 kills in victory

After struggling the last few matches, the Sul Ross State volleyball team snapped a six-game losing streak during the season finale by defeating the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets in five sets, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

The Lobos started off the opening set leading 3-0. Kamrynn Caruth tallied a pair of service aces during the rally.

Sul Ross then used a 5-0 run to increase its lead to 8-1. Annika Canaba had three kills during the rally while Loren Garcia added with one.

After a kill from Victoria Flores, the Lobos led by 10.

The Lobo offense was on a roll as it went on a 4-0 run to make the score 24-15. Flores added with one kill while Canaba had two during the run.

LeTourneau evened things up in the second game. The Yellowjackets led 10-5 before Sul Ross cut the deficit to within two in the middle of the set.

Sul Ross then slowly started creeping back into the game after using a 5-0 run to tie up the set at 22-all. Flores came up big with a kill and a service ace while Daniella Garcia tallied two kills.

LeTourneau closed out the set with a 3-0 run to tie up the match.

After five lead changes to begin the third set, Sul Ross took an 11-6 lead. Cassandra Espinoza later had a kill to put the Lobos up by six.

The Yellowjackets fought back to within two before the Lobos sealed the game by ending on a 5-1 run.

LeTourneau was on cruise control, leading 17-7 in the fourth set. Sul Ross came all the way back to trail by two points after a kill from Canaba.

Sul Ross was within one point until LeTourneau came up with a kill to force a deciding fifth set.

The Lobos came out firing, leading 13-8.

Canaba tallied a kill while Tatyana Colon put the finishing touches on the match with a service ace.

Leading the way with 24 kills was Canaba. She had 21 assists and 10 digs to tally a triple-double. Taryn Griner added with nine kills while Daniella Garcia and Flores added with eight each.

Loren Garcia tallied six kills. Caruth had 32 assists and 13 digs while Faith Herrera recorded 20 digs.

Colon finished with five service aces to give the Lobos 12 for the match.
